PURPOSE: A failure occurrence alarming apparatus and method of a telephone switching system are provided for a maintenance and repair handling person to easily recognize a failure state occurring in a system by displaying the failure of the telephone switching system on a display unit of a phone set. CONSTITUTION: A failure detector(31) detects a failure occurring in a telephone switching system(11). A failure output unit(41) transmits failure information when the failure is detected by the failure detector(31). A failure outputting apparatus(21) receives the failure information from the failure output unit(21) and displays the failure information in a predetermined format. A failure terminal processor(51) receives the failure information from the failure outputting apparatus(41), detects whether there is a specific terminal to be reported as having a failure, and converts the failure information into a message format and outputs it. A local board manager(61) receives the output message from the failure terminal processor(51), reconstructs it as a failure output and outputs it. A failure reporting terminal(71) receives the failure output message and displays it on a display unit.
