PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a passive matrix type liquid crystal display device permitting to realize reduction in power consumption without increase in a circuit scale. SOLUTION: This passive matrix type liquid crystal display device comprises video memory 1 for storing display data, a memory control means 3 for reading and writing the display data, a display data detection means 4 for detecting one frame of the display data read by this memory control means 3, a display data decoding means 5 for decoding the display data read by the memory control means 3, an FRC pattern generation means 7 for generating an FRC pattern corresponding to the display data by a detection signal outputted from the display data detection means 4, and a selection means 8 for selecting the FRC pattern by a selection signal outputted from the display data decoding means 5.
