The recuperator consists of two endless belt conveyors mounted one on top of the other to form a pressure channel between them to carry the pollutant from the water surface into a storage container on board a vessel. The depth of the channel between the conveyors can be adjusted, and the belts can also be changed to suit different types of pollutant substances; they can be of reinforced rubber that is resistant to hydrocarbons, with or without surface roughness, or they can have grooved, bristle or sponge surfaces. The belts are cleaned automatically at their discharge ends by sets of compression rollers (2) and scrapers (5), and the addition of articulated chains on the belts prevents any slippage. The forward end of the recuperator has a large V-shaped opening to take in the major part of any pollutant in its field of operation, and an endless screw (4) or additional plain conveyor belts can be attached to guide the pollutant towards the opening. A steel cable (3) cuts through the pollutant so that it is collected without scattering. In addition, the static collecting tank can be replaced by pleated bags with floats that can be closed and towed behind the vessel or left for later collection. The system can also be used in conjunction with a land or amphibious vehicle.
