PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control device for diagnosing falilure in an EGR device, without hindering improvement in the ride comfort and drivability of an automobile in the lean burning combustion running in the engine of cylinder injection of fuel. SOLUTION: An engine control device, provided with an engine running condition measuring means, an electrically controlled throttle valve being feedback controlled based on measuring by the said measuring means to follow a target value, and an exhaust gas recirculation means for recirculating exhaust gas to a suction passage in accordance with the running condition of a engine, is equipped with a means for controlling the recirculating flow rate of the exhaust gas, and a means for diagnosing the failure of the said recirculation means, and the said diagnosing means controls the said controlling means to diagnose the failure for forcedly changing the recirculating quantity of the exhaust gas at the time of diagnosis.
