PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation of the display quality due to an insulating film. SOLUTION: In a plate type display element 1, a medium layer 4 is arranged in a sealed space 21 surrounded with a first substrate 5, a second substrate 6, and a frame-shaped seal member 7, and one or more first display electrodes 8, a color filter layer 17, a smooth layer 18, and a first insulating film 9 are arranged between the medium layer 4 and the first substrate 5. An end face 25 of the first insulating film 9 is placed between an end 27 of a picture display area 22 and a seal member inner end face 26 when viewed from a normal direction DV of the surface of the first substrate. Preferably, a distance W1 from the end face 25 of the first insulating film to the seal member inner end face 26 is set to >=1100μm, and a distance W2 from the end face 25 of the first insulating film to the end 27 of the picture display area is set to >=150μm and <=1250μm. When the medium layer 4 is made of a liquid crystal material, the end face of a first oriented film closest to the medium layer is arranged 500μm outside the outer end face of the seal member.
