PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographic element containing a silver halide emulsion having high inherent light absorbing property in the blue region as well as low pressure responsiveness and enhanced photographic responsiveness. SOLUTION: The photographic element comprises a silver halide emulsion layer containing core/shell silver halide grains. Each core region of the core/shell silver halide grains contains about 5-20% silver iodide-containing silver bromide and each shell region contains about 0.1-10% silver iodide-containing silver bromide. The layer contains a fragmentable electron donor compound of the formula X-Y' or a compound containing the part of the formula -X-Y' (where X is an electron donor part; Y' is a releasable proton H or a releasable group Y; and when Y' is a proton, a base covalent-bonds directly or indirectly to X). The X-Y' has 0 to about 1.4 V oxidation potential, the oxidized form of the X-Y' is subjected to a bond cleavage reaction to give the radical of X and a released fragment Y' and, optionally, 3) the radical of X has <=-0.7 V oxidation potential.
