PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical character reader which can discriminate type characters of different fonts. SOLUTION: A loop detection part 31 extracts loop position information generated by right-left division and mutual distance information from a cut independent character image and sends them out to a character decision part 32. A decision dictionary memory 33 is previously stored with a character decision dictionary showing feature constitution composed of loop position information by characters and mutual distance information. The character decision part 32 matches the loop position information and mutual distance information extracted by the detection part 31 against the character decision dictionary in the decision dictionary memory 33 to decide characters.
