The apparatus consists of conveyors made from chains with articulated links passing round driving and guide sprockets and equipped with self-tipping scoops, which are quickly interchangeable. Depending on the nature of the pollutants and the scoops, the latter can be emptied with the aid of scrapers, rollers or squeezers. The apparatus consists of conveyors made from chains with articulated links of the type used on fork-lift trucks, passing round driving (4) and guide (5) sprockets and equipped with self-tipping scoops (3). The scoops are designed to be quickly interchangeable, and are made so that the pollutant substances do not adhere to them, e.g. they can have an elastic rubber lining, a reinforced plastic container, or a flexible metal mesh layer, and they can contain a spongy material 4 - 5 cm thick to absorb the pollutant. Depending on the nature of the pollutants and the scoops the latter can be emptied with the aid of scrapers, rollers or squeezers (1, 2). The chain and scoop conveyors can be made to a reduced scale and mounted side by side on a vessel designed to recover the floating pollutant, with the scoops cutting through it and leaving the remaining substance in a homogeneous layer. The speed of the vessel's advance and the speed of the conveyor's rotation are governed by the nature of the substance being recuperated and the prevailing weather conditions.
