PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television broadcast receiver that receives a television broadcast program, retrieves a preset character from character information of the program and records the program when the set character is retrieved. SOLUTION: The television broadcast receiver of this invention is provided with a broadcast reception means that receives a television broadcast program including character information, a character information extract means that extracts the character information from the received television broadcast program, a character information storage means that stores the extracted character information, a character retrieval means that stores designated and desired retrieval information and compares it with character data stored in the character information storage means to retrieve the desired character, a recording means that records the program, and a video recording control means that controls the video recording means to record the program in cross-reference with the desired character in response to the result of retrieval of the desired character. The television broadcast receiver can control recording of a desired program by using the character information.
