PURPOSE: A variable valve timing apparatus is provided to maximize output efficiency by adjusting timing when a suction valve is open and closed depending on an operational speed of engine and to contain an additional effect of preventing occurrence of impact sound between a chain and a chain guide with absorbing a traverse vibration of chain as a power delivery element. CONSTITUTION: Corresponding to upward slide movement of a slide bar(15), a subsidiary chain sprocket(11) pulls upwardly a chain intermediate suction and exhaust cam sprockets(7,5) to offer phase angle to the suction cam sprocket. And opening and closing of the suction valve is advanced relative to the exhaust valve enabling an output enhancement to be accomplished through improvement of volumetric efficiency with large overlap. Moreover, relative phase angles of suction and exhaust cams in an optimal state are found in respective operational conditions. Then a position of slider is confirmed and a continuous variable valve system is functioned using a control through an ECU(Electronic Control Unit).
