PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device for discharge lamp in which the circuitry is simplified and lighting can be made possible even when the contact is somewhat poor. SOLUTION: The lighting device of discharge lamp comprises a load circuit LC containing a current limiting impedance L2 and a discharge lamp DL, a means of generating high frequency HFG biasing the load circuit, a means of detecting circuit condition CSD to detect the circuit condition of the load circuit, and a control means CC to decide the mounting of discharge lamp and control the high frequency generating means HFG by obtaining the detection signal of the circuit condition by operating the high frequency generating means HFG for a prescribed time. The device also comprises a starting circuit ST containing a delay circuit including a capacitor C4 and by supplying electricity to a control means by discharging the electric charge of the capacitor C4 it can operate the high frequency generating means HFG for a prescribed time.
