PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optimum recording waveform detection method having enhanced compatibility, by precisely detecting lengths of a mark and a space recorded on an optical recording medium and eliminating a detective error of an optimum recording waveform due to a difference, etc., of optical system and circuit system at every device. SOLUTION: This method uses push-pull signals Tpp obtained on a photo-detector by a light quantity distribution difference of back/forth of the track tangential direction. In trial write prior to information recording, the recording waveform width is successively changed at every specified area, and the trial write is performed to the optical recording medium (S1-S9), and since a light emitting waveform of a light source such that the pulse interval of the push-pull signals Tpp obtained by reproducing (S10-S16) the trial write area becomes a required value is obtained (S17, S18) as an optimum recording condition, the lengths of the mark and space recorded on the optical recording medium are precisely obtained.
