Multifilament strand has a rectangular compatible (non-polluting, oxygen permeable) silver alloy (e.g. AgPa) matrix containi superconducting filaments having rectangular cross-section and arranged in staggered rows. The two opposite sides of the strand covered with a non-compatible (polluting, hardly oxygen-permeable) silver alloy (e.g. AgMg or AgCu). Production of a multifilament superconductor having a compatible silver alloy matrix by a 'powder-in-tube' method is characterized by the following. During production of the multifilament billet (12) a number of sections (11) are arranged per layer such that, in cross-section, the assembly of the layers of the sections has a convergent-divergent form. The neck (7) of the convergent-divergent part is contained in the median plane of superposition. During mechanical treatment of the multifilament billet, prior to heat treatment for synthesis, a rolling force is applied the direction (13) perpendicular to the median plane of superposition, and at least one side of the rolled billet is cut perpendicul to the median plane of superposition, to reveal the compatible silver alloy matrix.
|
