PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting leak of a diesel engine for a vehicle are provided to prevent the lowering of engine capacity, and fire risk and restrain generation of unnecessary exhaust gas by automatically judging leak. CONSTITUTION: A method for detecting leak of a diesel engine for a vehicle includes the steps of receiving and reading detected signals of an injector, supercharging pressure, rail pressure, cooling water temperature, a pressure control valve, accelerator open degree, engine rotary frequency, and inhaled air quantity and judging whether an engine over-run mode performance request signal is applied(S110); if applied, judging whether a rail pressure sensor is normal; if normal, judging whether the pressure control valve is normal(S120); if normal, detecting the current rail pressure and storing the same as a first pressure value, and judging whether injector driving voltage is 0V(S130-S150); if so, detecting the current rail pressure and storing the same as a second pressure value, and judging whether the difference in the first and second pressure value is higher than the preliminarily set reference value(S160-170); and if higher, outputting a predetermined leak generation display signal(S180).
