PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To judge the degree of damage of a magnetic tape used in a magnetic tape device for recording/reproducing a video signal, audio signal and control signal. SOLUTION: A control signal judging means for judging whether the reproduced control signal is lacking, and a control signal counting means for counting the number of times decided as the lack of the control signal by the control signal judging means are provided in the magnetic tape device for recording/ reproducing the video signal, audio signal and control signal. At the time of reproducing the magnetic tape, the degree of damage of the magnetic tape is judged by the number of times of the lack of the control signal counted by the above control signal counting means.
