PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information retrieving device with which both a retrieval omission and a retrieval error are reduced by enabling retrieval at the level of a category (the category of the subject of a document) intended by a user. SOLUTION: The relation between a subject category or each of category factors statistically found as finer classifications which characteristically appears in a document base 1 and each of documents 11 related thereto is made into an index and stored in a category factor index storage part 3. Corresponding to the retrieval request of the user, a category factor retrieving part 4 refers to the category factor index and selects a category factor corresponding to the retrieval request and defines a document strongly related to that category factor as the retrieved result.
