A handset in which a single display device is visible from opposed sides of the handset body, one of which is normally presented to the user when the handset is resting in a cradle and the other of which is presented to the user when the handset is lifted from the cradle for use. Messages are displayed by generating patterns which are visible from both sides of the handset body and the generated pattern is reversed when the handset is lifted from or returned to the cradle such that a message to be displayed is presented as a pattern in a format suitable for reading from one side of the body when the handset is mounted on the cradle and as a pattern in a format suitable for reading from the other side of the body when the handset is lifted from the cradle.
