The method involves supporting the workpieces on the outside of the ring (4) with a support and applying (22) a breaking force from the inside of the ring (12). The workpiece is essentially elastically supported with that aid of an elastic material (24,24a-24d) with a Shore-A hardness of less than or equal to 70.
