Closing a reactor pressure vessel (60) charged with fuel elements comprises reducing the water level (68) in the reactor pit (66) below a sealing surface (15) on the lower part (9) of the vessel; placing a manipulator (3) equipped with a drying system (17) near to the sealing surface; moving the manipulator in the peripheral direction (13) along the sealing surface whilst the drying system dries the sealing surface and placing a lid (70) on the sealing surface. An Independent claim is also included for a device for closing a reactor pressure vessel. Preferred Features: The manipulator automatically moves along the sealing surface.
