The device has a planar housing geometry and thin, strip-shaped current collectors (9,10), electrodes (7,8) and separators. Each current collector is coated on one side with suitable electrode material and the current collector electrode units and the separator are folded once or more in zigzag fashion and interleaved so that the corresponding electrodes are opposed and only separated by the separator (11).
