PURPOSE: A power train for a five-speed automatic transmission is provided to reduce power loss to a minimum in over drive, and to lower power loss by friction elements and the size and weight of the power train. CONSTITUTION: A power train for a five-speed automatic transmission includes a first and second planetary gear set(1,3), clutch units(C1,C2), and brake units(B1,B2) for selective working of a fourth operating element as a reaction force element . The first planetary gear set is composed of combination of two simple planetary sets(PG1,PG2) and forms four operating elements and connected to an input shaft for the first operating element to be always worked as an input element. The second planetary is composed of combination of two simple planetary gear sets(PG3,PG4) and forms four operating elements and the first operating element always works as an output element and the second operating element has variable selective connection to the first and second operating element of the first planetary gear set, the third operating element is fixedly connected to the fourth operating element of the first planetary gear set. The clutch units intermits the power to be transmitted from the first and second operating element of the first planetary gear set to the second operating element of the second planetary gear set.
