The transmission includes a control device for regulating a power flow between an energy storage device and the motor/generators as well as between the first and second motor/generators. A compound planetary gear set has first and second planetary gear sub-sets. Each of the latter has an inner gear member and an outer gear member. Each of the members meshes with a number of planet gear members. A device is provided to connect the first motor/generator to at least one of the gear members in the compound planetary gear set. A device is incorporated to connect the second motor/generator to at least one of the other of the gear members in the compound planetary gear set. A device is used to connect the input device to at least one of the remaining gear members in the compound planetary gear set.
