A radial pneumatic tire has a tread (4) with layers (5) of oriented rubber, the orientation being in the circumferential direction. The layers extend over the whole tread width, including the shoulders. The oriented rubber can be applied as sheet (5) or wound continuously as strip. An Independent claim is also included for the process of winding on symmetrically a strip of oriented rubber, e.g. rubber extended in Calender rolls, using the same or a different rubber composition as the remainder of the tread and vulcanizing the assembly.
