A mechanical timepiece comprises a quartz-crystal oscillator (210) constituting an oscillation source, an IC (212) including a divider (214) receiving an output signal produced by the oscillation of the quartz-crystal oscillator (210) and dividing the signal to deliver a signal concerning time, a power source (220) for operating the IC, a time counter for counting time, a rate detector (330) for detecting the rate of the timepiece, a rate adjuster (470, 550) including a regulator (420) operable on the basis of the count signal provided by the time counter and the operation state signal that shows the rate detected by the rate detector (330), whereby the rate of the timepiece is regulated. The mechanical timepiece is of a high degree of precision.
