The method for producing a ring part from sheet metal from a can lid involves forming a flat plate part with hot-sealable coating (7) on the inside into a cylindrical tube (14). The axially running edges (17) of the tube are pressed together to form a blunt abutmeent and a cooling plate (18) is pressed against the inside of the tube along the axially running edges. A blunt abutment welding seam (20) is produced along the axially running edges by a laser beam (19) direct on the outside of the edges. The tube is then divided into equally long sections, one end of each of which is conically widened. The other end of each tube section is drawn inwards radially to form a locating surfaccee for a tear-off foil. The conically widened ends are turned over to form an outer edge to accommodate the body of a can.
