The method involves detecting a magnetic field affected by the vehicle either at the trailer (2), if the magnetic field is present on the tractor vehicle (2), or on the tractor vehicle if the field is on the trailer, and generating a signal representing the direction of the magnetic field with a magnetic field sensor (11), which is used to determine the bend angle. The magnetic field can be generated (12) at suitable time points.
