PURPOSE: A control method of an automatic transmission is provided to easily brake a vehicle by performing down shifting depending on deceleration and a vehicle speed. CONSTITUTION: A control method of a down-shifting automatic transmission comprises the steps of: calculating a deceleration of a vehicle by measuring speed of a vehicle; performing down shifting by advancing a down-shift timing when the deceleration of the vehicle is over a specific level; and performing down shifting without advancement of the down-shift timing if rapid deceleration doesn't occur. By determining a shift level depending on deceleration, effect of engine braking is improved. Further, skidding of a vehicle of an automatic transmission vehicle is avoided. As a vehicle is accelerated without down-shifting during deceleration, acceleration efficiency is improved.
