PURPOSE: An exhaust smoke reducing method is provided to prevent the accumulation of smoke in a muffler at a low-speed and low-load region and to reduce smoke at a high-speed and high-load region. CONSTITUTION: Smoke accumulated in a muffler is evaporated by heating the muffler up to 300deg.C for 150sec. At a low-speed and low-load region in a normal traveling state, a heater is operated(S16) if the internal temperature of the muffler is lower than 300deg.C. After 150sec(S13), the heater is turned off(S18) when the internal temperature of the muffler becomes 300deg.C(S17) to evaporate the smoke condensed in the muffler. At a high-speed and high-load region in a normal traveling state, the heater is operated(S26) if the internal temperature of the muffler is lower than 600deg.C(S21). When the internal temperature of the muffler reaches 600deg.C(S27), smoke is burned and the heater is stopped(S28). Therefore, the exhaust smoke of a diesel vehicle is reduced.
