PURPOSE: A refrigerator operating method is provided to improve preservation efficiency of foodstuff by separately operating a freezing compartment and a refrigeration compartment and to reduce power consumption by removing unnecessary operating time of a freezing cycle device. CONSTITUTION: A method for operating a refrigerator comprises the steps of: detecting a temperatures of freezing and refrigeration compartments; comparing the detected temperatures to the predetermined values stored in a control unit; and selecting an operating mode depending on the result of temperature comparison. As the freezing compartment and the refrigeration compartment are kept at uniform temperatures, local super-cooling of the refrigeration compartment is avoided and preservation efficiency of foodstuff is improved. By circulating the cold air returned from the freezing compartment through the refrigeration compartment, operating time of a freezing cycle device is saved. Further, power consumption is reduced.
