A surface-modified inorganic oxide powder obtained by treating the surface of an inorganic oxide with a liquid mixture of an organopolysiloxane and a silane compound in the presence of an acid or base. The powder is highly effective in thickening and in enhancing thixotropic properties and has excellent long-term stability.
