PURPOSE: A portable electronic book and a method for operating the same are provided to facilitate a use of the electronic book and to enhance a rate occupied by a display area out of the electronic book area by reducing the number of switching element being mounted at an electronic book. CONSTITUTION: If a user turns on a switch unit by operating the switch unit(S100), a control unit compares a time for switch-on status of the switch unit with a pre-fixed the first setting time(S200). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is less than the first setting time, a predetermined quantity of page down of the contents displayed on a screen is performed(S300). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is more than the first setting time, a control unit compares a time for switch-on status of the switch unit with a pre-fixed the second setting time(S400). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is less than the second setting time, a predetermined quantity of page up of the contents displayed on a screen is performed(S500). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is more than the second setting time, a book marking process for memorizing a position of contents being displayed on the current screen is performed(S600). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is more than the second setting time, a control unit compares a time for switch-on status of the switch unit with a pre-fixed the third setting time(S700). If a time for switch-on status of the switch unit is more than the third setting time, an electronic book is turned off by cutting-off a power source being supplied to the electronic book(S800).
