Apparatus for gripping a tubular pile 12 during a pile-driving operation comprises two pairs of jaws 11a, 11b, 13a, 13b that are pressed against the walls of the pile by the action of two wedges 3a, 3b when they are driven in opposite directions by working fluid entering a cylinder 2a through a port S, said cylinder being slidingly lodged within a fixed cylinder 1a and containing a piston 2b. The head of the cylinder 2a engages with the wedge 3b while a rod attached to the piston engages with the other wedge 3a, the innermost jaws 11a, 11b being mounted on blocks that abut the latter wedge whereas the outermost jaws 13a, 13b are carried by levers 6a, 6b mounted on pivot pins 7a, 7b and coupled to slidable blocks 5a, 5b on either side of the wedge 3b by pins 9a, 9b. When the blocks 5a, 5b are driven apart from each other by the wedge associated therewith, they are pressed against a plate 8 abutting a plate 1b that is attached to the pile-driver (not shown) and is made integral with the cylinder 1a and webs 1c 1 , 1c 2 supporting the pins 9a, 9b. When the jaws are to be retracted from the pile, working fluid enters the cylinder 2a through a port L. |
