A timing reproducer comprises adding means (41a) for adding an in-phase component to a quadrature component in a baseband signal, subtracting means (41b) for subtracting one of the in-phase component and the quadrature component from the other in the baseband signal, addition correlation operating means (42a) for calculating the correlation between an addition signal and a 1/2 symbol frequency component generated on the receiver side, subtraction correlation operating means (42b) for operating the correlation between the subtraction signal and the 1/2 symbol frequency component, vecto r selecting means (43) for comparing the addition correlation signal with the subtraction correlation signal and selecting the larger correlation signal, and timing phase difference calculating means (44) for calculating a timing phase difference by using the vector angle represented by the selection correlation signal.
