PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal medium satisfying various properties required for an electro-optical display element, having low threshold voltage, wide nematic temperature range and low viscosity, excellent in rapid response and capable of sustaining high retention ratio to a high temperature and a liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal medium or to obtain a liquid crystal medium and a liquid crystal display element [TN-(twisted nematic), STN-(super twisted nematic) and AM-(active matrix) LCD(liquid crystal display)] improved in disadvantages of the above properties than conventional materials. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal medium comprises a first component represented by general formula (I) and a second component represented by general formula (II). The liquid crystal display element is provided by using the liquid crystal medium.
