PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply and efficiently capturing a metal or metalloid contained in industrial wastewater to clean treated water and concentrating and recovering the metal or metalloid as a valuable component. SOLUTION: A method for treating an aqueous liquid containing a metal or metalloid includes a capturing process (1) for bringing a chelate forming fibers, wherein a functional group having chelate forming capacity of a metal or metalloid is introduced into fiber molecules, into contact with water to be treated containing a metal or metalloid to capture the metal or metalloid on the chelate forming fibers by chelating, a separation process (2) for separating the chelate forming fibers used in the chelating and capturing of the metal or metalloid in the capturing process (1), an elution process (3) for treating the chelate forming fibers obtained in the separation process (2) with an acid or alkali aqueous solution to elute the chelated and captured metal or metalloid from the chelate forming fibers and a process (4) for returning the chelate forming fibers from which the metal or metalloid is eluted to the capturing process to circulate and use the same.
