PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic carrier for an automobile exhaust gas cleaning catalyst excellent in durability and cleaning performance having resistance to thermal fatigue capable of resisting to high temperature/high speed exhaust gas stream and also capable of resisting to quick heating/cooling. SOLUTION: In the metallic carrier for the automobile exhaust gas cleaning catalyst, a metallic honeycomb body obtained by laminating flat metallic foil and corrugated foil and winding them into spiral and a metallic outer cylinder surrounding there are provided, and the treatment in which free flat foil used at the beginning of winding of the metallic foil and crossing a cylindrical hollow part of the honeycomb body in diameter direction or a chord direction is hollowed and removed by mechanically working in the axial direction or pressurized along the upmost inner peripheral part is carried out, and the outer diameter of the honeycomb body is kept in ϕB<=10/100×ϕA where the outer diameter of the honeycomb body is ϕA and the inner diameter is ϕB.
