PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition which is almost free from a volatile organic compound and forms a coated film showing an excellent adhesion to oil surfaces, blocking resistance, water resistance, etc. SOLUTION: The aqueous coating composition contains as components [A] an emulsion resin obtained through emulsion polymerization of (a) from 0.1 to 30 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer of the formula: CH2=CRCOO (CnH2nCOO)m-H, wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; n is an integer of 2-10; and m is an integer of 1-5, (b) from 0.5 to 20 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a carbonyl group and (c) from 50 to 99.4 wt.% ethylenically unsaturated monomer which is different from the above-monomers (a) and (b) and is copolymerizable with these, and [B] a compound having two or more hydrazide groups within a molecule.
