PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a septic tank and its operating method, capable of easily controlling the content of MLSS, which is an important operation factor of an activated sludge treatment system, and operating in a proper range of the content of MLSS even when each set destination has a different inflow load. SOLUTION: In the septic tank where an aeration tank 5 is installed to apply an activated sludge method, a control panel 3 connected to the aeration tank 5 has a switch 1 for setting the number of persons, by which a sludge circulation amount is varied depending the number of persons who are objects of treatment.
