PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the safety of a chair with a mechanically simple construction when a foot rest is retracted in a non-used position. SOLUTION: In the chair a seat part 2 is provided on a base frame 1, a foot rest 3 is retractably provided under the seat part 2 by swinging and a driving extendable unit 5 is interposed between the foot rest 3 and the base frame 1 in such a way that the foot rest 3 can be switched between the used position and the non-used position in which it is retracted. A mechanical buffer means 6 which stops the swinging downward of the foot rest 3 when a thrusting-up force larger than a predetermined force is applied to the foot rest 3 and continues the swinging downward of the foot rest 3 to the non-used position when the thrusting-up force is released is provided between the foot rest 3 and the driving extendable unit 5.
