PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an acrylic synthetic fiber which comprises an acrylic copolymer containing acrylonitrile in an amount of >=70 wt.%, whose imparted crimps can easily be removed by a polishing treatment, and which can give a plush fabric having excellent touch and appearance, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This synthetic fiber which comprises an acrylic copolymer containing acrylonitrile in an amount of >=70 wt.%, has excellent crimp removability, is useful for a plush fabric, and is obtained by spinning the acrylic copolymer with a good solvent therefor, drying and compacting the obtained fiber at 120 to 160 deg.C, subjecting the fiber to a relaxed wet heat treatment in 110 to 150oC pressurized steam at a relaxation rate of 0.6 time (40%) to 0.85 time (15%), and then imparting crimps, and has a crimp-disappearing temperature of 80 to 140 deg.C on a dry heat treatment for 5 min by a vertical hanging method using a load of 4 mg/dtex, after crimps are imparted at a rate of 3 to 20 crimps/25 mm. The crimps can easily be removed by a polishing treatment.
