PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a useful substance of an ashless, cleaning dispersing agent which is excellent in the high temperature stability and the high temperature cleaning ability and also has a microparticle dispersing action; an additive to lubricants and to fuel oils; and a lubricant composition and a fuel oil composition each containing the above additive. SOLUTION: The above substances comprise succinimide which is obtained by (1) hydrogenation of and/or (2) adsorbent contact treatment of a hydrocarbon- substituted succinimide or a composition containing it.
