1,085,740. Printer control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 12, 1966 [April 20, 1965], No. 15932/66. Heading G4H. Coded characters are entered in a recirculating delay line store as vacant time slots in the store become available, and at the same time, an address counter is advanced by one to enter an address (equal to the character position in the line to be printed) in a further recirculating delay line store. When all the characters have been read in, the character store contains a complete line, though the characters may not be in the same order as that in which they were received, and the address store contains the addresses in the time slots corresponding to the characters with which the addresses are associated. Both stores recirculate once as each character on a print drum moves into the printing position A coded disc coupled to the print drum provides signals indicating the character arriving at the print station and when these signals are successfully compared with the stored character signals as the character store circulates, the associated addresses are gated out from the address store to a matrix decoder which sets up those print hammer drivers which correspond to the positions in which the character being considered is to be printed. A clock disc associated with the print drum fires the set hammer drivers when the character is in position. Control signals.-Provision is made for advancing the address counter by multiples of eight in response to a special control character when it is desired to leave a large number of spaces between printed characters, as in tabulating. Other control functions are described, e.g. line-spacing. |
