PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive backing material for penetration welding easily workable on the using site and also capable of recycling. SOLUTION: This backing material for penetration welding is composed in such a manner that a kneaded material 1 obtained by kneading sand and water glass to form into the shape of clay or a kneaded material 5 obtained by kneading a flux and water glass to form into the shape of clay is molded into a desired shape A or B provided with weld metal inducing slopes 2 or weld metal inducing grooves 3 and is hardened. Since expensive equipment, special technology and skill or the like are not required, the backing material is easily workable on the using site, is inexpensive and is capable of recycling.
