Injection moulding apparatus comprises an injection barrel 10 having an extension 14 forming a discharge passage, means 15 for heating the extension only, and an injection piston 19 which can be withdrawn from the barrel 10 and pivoted to a position clear of the barrel to permit replenishment of the latter. The apparatus is designed primarily for jointing electric cables having sheaths and/or cores of plastics material. The piston 19 is mounted on a ram 20 which is in screw-threaded engagement with a pressure screw 23. By turning a handle 24 the piston 19 is advanced or retracted in the barrel 10. As resistance to forward movement of the piston 19 changes, the compression of springs 28, 29 increases or decreases and the piston 19 is advanced smoothly. The injection barrel 10 is mounted on two guide rods 4, 5 and can be pivoted about the rod 4, when the piston 19 is withdrawn. The piston 19 and its mounting are also pivotable about the rod 4. The barrel 10 is of stainless steel and the extension 14 of brass. The injection nozzle 16 has a manually rotatable locking collar 17 for screw-threaded engagement at 18 with a mould 33. A scale rod 30 carries two scales, one for indicating the pressure on the material being injected and the other for indicating the extent of movement of the piston 19 into the barrel 10. In a second embodiment (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) the piston (not shown), ram (20) and rods (4, 5) are pivoted about stub axles (38) to an approximately vertical position after the piston has been withdrawn from the barrel.
