SOLUTION: The mechanical pencil comprises a chuck 3 disposed forward of a lead tank 2 for containing a plurality of leads to grasp or release the lead. In the pencil, the diameter of a lead inserting hole 5 from the tank 2 to the lead grasping part 6 of the chuck 3 is formed 1.1 to 1.9 times as large as the diameter of the used lead.
