PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To further enhance the capacity of an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst having a laminated structure showing excellent NOx purifying capacity in a lean atmosphere. SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst wherein particles of at least one second metal selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, Rh and Ir and different from a first metal are laminated on the particles of a first metal selected from the group consisting of Pt, Pd, Au, Ag, Rh and Ir provided on an inorganic oxide carrier, the catalyst is heated to 500-900 deg.C in a non-oxidative atmosphere or the catalyst wherein a mass ratio of first metal particles/second metal particles is 2 or more is heated to 500-900 deg.C in a non-oxidative atmosphere.
