PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder suitable for reduction in size in which a high quality multivalued recording image can be formed without requiring a plurality of recording heads. SOLUTION: In an ink jet recorder where electrothermal conversion elements are heated with a driving pulse to bubble ink and an image is recorded by ejecting ink drops from nozzles onto a recording medium with the pressure of bubble, the driving voltage and driving pulse width of the recording head are altered simultaneously depending on recording data. For example, the driving voltage is increased and the driving pulse width is shortened at the time of ejecting a small liquid drop whereas the driving voltage is decreased and the driving pulse width is lengthened at the time of ejecting a large liquid drop.
