PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a cyclic ester-modified cellulose derivative that is advantageous for an industrial use in that good agitation of the reaction mixture can be maintained until the end of the reaction, the product can be easily taken out of the reaction vessel, and the reaction proceeds fast. SOLUTION: A cellulose derivative having a hydroxyl group is subjected to a ring-opening graft polymerization with a cyclic ester in the presence of a ring-opening polymerization catalyst to produce a cyclic ester-modified cellulose derivative, wherein the polymerization is carried out in cyclohexanone orγ-butylolactone as a solvent.
