PURPOSE: A laser diode and a manufacturing method are provided to fit for a DVD system by solving the astigmatism problem through the reduction of current dispersion on the sides and expanding the horizontal radiation angle of the light source. CONSTITUTION: In the laser diode, a first n-type nitride semiconductor layer(1100), having an irregular surface with only part of it etched, is formed on a circuit board(1000). An n-type semiconductor layer(1300) is formed on the first n-type nitride semiconductor layer(1100) with the central part etched. An n-side electrode(1200) is formed on the thinner part of the first n-type nitride semiconductor layer(1100). A layer of insulation from current(1400) is formed surrounding the etched part of the n-type semiconductor layer(1300). A second n-type nitride semiconductor layer(1500) is formed covering the layer of insulation from current(1400) and the etched part of the first n-type semiconductor layer(1300). And an activation layer(1600), a p-type nitride semiconductor layer(1700), a p-type nitride semiconductor layer(1700), p-type semiconductor layers(1800,l900) forming a ridge with the part of the center prodding up, and a p-side electrode covering the ridge are formed in turn on the second n-type nitride semiconductor layer(1500).
