PURPOSE: An anticancer agent, cordycepin, separated from Cordyceps militaris and its producing method are provided, which is useful for the prevention and the treatment of cancers caused by human solid tumor cell lines. CONSTITUTION: The cordycepin represented by formula (I) is separated from Cordyceps militaris and shows strong anticancer activity for human solid tumor cell lines such as A549(lung carcinoma), SK-OV-2(Ovarian cancer), SK-MEL-2(Melanoma), XF-498(CNS cancer) and HCT-15(Colon cancer). The method for producing cordycepin comprises the steps of: boiling Cordyceps militaris, adding methanol and filtering it to produce the extract of Cordyceps militaris; sequentially separating the extract through Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol, water layers; developing an active fragment in chloroform-methanol on silica gel and purifying it with prep HPLC; and obtaining an active peak using methanol-water(2:8).
